This weeks’ Famitsu has revealed a whole new bunch of systems that we’ll be getting in 3rd Super Robot Wars Z – Jigoku Hen, including a Twin Battle-like squad system.
Tag Battle System
You can organize your units into pairs using the Tag Battle System. Unlike OGS Twin Battle System, you can’t separate or create new tags during missions, however you can switch between the main/sub units. Units which aren’t deployed in a tag formation get 1.5x PP. Motherships are deployed as single units only.
During the map, both tagged units will be displayed on map. When attacking enemy units, you have a choice of either doing a ‘center’ attack or ‘wide’ attack.
Center attack
The center attack concentrates the attacks of your main and sub units onto a single unit in the enemy formation. The hit rate of the main unit will be increased by 20%. It seems the sub unit will used a fixed attack (marked with Assist, and is a P type move). Additionally, there’s a new skill called ‘Covering Attack’ (“援護攻撃”) which can increase the damaged caused.
Wide Attack
In the wide attack, the main and sub will attack the main and sub of the enemy formation respectively. The damage of the sub unit is multiplied by 1.2x in this case.
ALL Attack
A staple of the OGS Twin System as well as the Alpha Squad system. It allows units to attack both units of the enemy formation at once with weapons marked ‘ALL’. When attacking two units instead of a single, the damage is reduced to 75% to each unit.
Tactical Command & Tension Gauge
The Tension Gauge is a new system for each tag unit which unlocks the Tactical Command when the Tension Gauge is full. The tension gauge has two levels and gains a level whenever the main or sub pilot in a tag unit levels up, or when the total kills between the main/sub unit in a tag unit is greater than a multiple of 2.
Once the gauge is full, choosing the Tactical Command gives you four options:
Multi-action – Grants the unit a 2nd turn if they destroy an enemy tag unit (like Continuous Action).
PP Bonus – Next enemy shot down will give double PP.
Z Chip Bonus – Next enemy shot down will give double Z chips.
SP Charge – Restore 15 SP for the main pilots of the main and sub units.
Upon using a Tactical Command, the Tension Gauge resets to 0.
Tactical Combo
By defeating successive enemy units (meaning the entire twin/tag unit) in a row, you get bonuses. Each team defeated increases the damage of all your units by 5%, and money and Z Chips earned by 5%, stacking up to a maximum bonus of 25%. The bonus is lost when the combo chain is broken (you don’t destroy an enemy with the next attack).
The combo gauge can be seen in the lower right corner.
PS Vita Version
It seems that despite original announcements that Z3 would be Digital only on the PS Vita, Tereda and crew have managed to overcome this problem with some fancy compression and can now manage to fit the game onto a card. Here is the boxart for the Vita version:
Notes
Looks like we’re getting the Z2 style 2D maps instead of 3D. Love it or hate it.
Z Chips – this could be referring to money, or a special currency of some kind? Maybe like the Bazaar from Z1.
Interesting screenshot from 2ch as to where Setsuna and Marida got their portraits from:
I’m a little sad about the 2D maps, but I’ll live. I love the pair system in every game they’ve done it in, and I was amazed when they didn’t have any sort of squad system for the Z2 games. I don’t quite get the conditions for Tactical Command: is it something that’s you’re going to use multiple times per map? Once a map? Once in a while if things line up?
Tactical Combo seems pretty cool, although I’m a tad concerned it’ll further encourage just making one really good unit/squad and having him wade out into the middle of enemy formations. Does it break when you counter an attack but fail to kill them with the counter? If so, finding a good place to bring out support units to repair will be much harder, and you’ll have to be careful that you don’t accidentally counter with a weak long range attack when they attack your melee units.
Is that the ReZEL Amuro’s piloting? I’m hopeful for some good stuff with the Unicorn story if so!
@Ben
Nah that’s Riddhe in the ReZEL. Poor Amuro gets his Re-GZ back lol. Though I’m assuming you could swap him into it since they’re all UC MS.
Sorry I missed a part from the Famitsu article. The Tension gauge resets after using Tactical Command for a unit, so you’ll have to recharge it again via the conditions to use it again.
@YJ
Bit confused by the ‘multiple of 2’ part: so do you get it every time you kill 2 guys? 2, 4, 6, 8? Or does the count double? 2, 4, 8, 16?
@Ben
The translation is a bit fuzzy so I can’t confirm. I assume it would be 2,4,6,8 etc. Also the gauge has 2 levels, so I’d assume you’d need either 4 kills, or 2 level ups, or 2 kills + 1 level up between the main and sub pilots in order to use the Tactical Command.
D’you think that there’ll be limitations as to which unit you can pair up with which? ‘Cause looking at that deployment roster (was that a deployment roster?), I didn’t see a single unit that was paired up with a unit from a different series.
@Dancou-Maryuu
I wouldn’t worry about it. The Famitsu article mentions you can pair your favourite units together.
Besides there was Amuro paired with Riddhe in one of the screenshots (CCA / UC).
was hoping they chose 3D sprites over 2D. might be because there’s a PS vita version so they didn’t want to overload the game with too much 3D goodness
Wait, why are Amuro and friends even there, i thought they went back to their world.
For all we know, this might actually BE their world. All the crazy dimensional stuff going on probably have something to do with events that should’ve happened less than a decade after the Gryps Conflict occuring alongside events that take place 12000 years after the war with the Shadow Angels.@Gman
So it’s possible that this time around the zexis gang are the ones teleported? @starqo
eight elements guren sighted! huzzah! (seriously hope poor lelouch gets a break in THIS storyline…)
anyways, i think it’s gonna be funny to see how the uc crew will interact with the counterattack crew, considering that the axis and laplace conflicts seem to have fused up.
any news on that new lead boss?
Man… Spoilers.
Warned you.
Seems that Chan Agi isn’t playable in this and Crowe, Esther, and Traiya are MIA. Don’t think there’s much mention of them and no appearances based off those that have played it already have said.
I may as well wait for Z3.2 as I’m sure that’ll be epic as hell.
